Data-driven insights to homelessness in BC

Friday, October 3, 2025

Homelessness remains a provincewide issue in B.C., affecting youth, families, seniors, and individuals from diverse backgrounds. The 2025 provincially funded point-in-time (PiT) counts across 20 communities show mixed trends: eight communities reported fewer people experiencing homelessness than in 2023, while 12 saw increases.

“We know more needs to be done to help the most vulnerable members of our communities, and that’s why we’re building safe, secure homes and providing needed supports to help people overcome the cycle of homelessness,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “We are seeing some positive results through our Belonging in B.C. plan, as our homeless and encampment response and temporary housing solutions are providing rapid, co-ordinated, multidisciplinary responses when encampments arise.”

The counts, conducted over a 24-hour period by volunteers, offer demographic insights including age, gender, Indigenous identity, health conditions, and service use. Indigenous people and former children in care remain over-represented. This year’s approach included Indigenous-led, trauma-informed methods to better reach undercounted populations.

Results will be integrated with 12 additional counts to form the 2024–25 Report on Homeless Counts, due this winter. B.C. remains the only province to fund PiT counts that align with federal efforts, offering a comprehensive view of homelessness.

Belonging in B.C. is part of a $19-billion housing investment. Since 2017, nearly 93,600 homes have been delivered or are underway, including over 9,600 supportive homes for people experiencing homelessness.

BC Housing coordinated the counts with the Homelessness Services Association of B.C. and the B.C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres. Full community profiles are available at: https://www.bchousing.org/research-centre/housing-data/homeless-counts
