Quadrangle recognized for adaptive reuse project

Quadrangle Architects, a Toronto-based firm, won three awards on Sept. 16 for its renovation and expansion of 60 Atlantic Ave. for client Hullmark Developments Ltd. The 115-year-old heritage property, located in Toronto’s Liberty Village neighbourhood, took home a Toronto Urban Design Award in the low-scale buildings in context category, an ARIDO Award in the restoration and adaptive reuse category and an Architect’s Journal Retrofit Award from London, UK for International Innovation.

The renovation presents a unique approach to preservation of the historical building. It features a contemporary Corten steel and glass service core that is attached to the original façade, giving the industrial building a more creative look. Where the building required reconstruction and restoration, new grey brick was used, creating contrast with the original buff brick.

The surroundings feature a newly excavated outdoor courtyard and accessible main entrance that serves the community. Landscaped grounds and a “60” graphic on the building, created by local artist Pascal Paquette, give the brick a softer look.

“We are overwhelmed to receive these three awards recognizing the project’s urban contribution and unique approach to adaptive reuse on the same night,” said Richard Witt, principal at Quadrangle, in a press release. “We are encouraged by the growing support for investing in the latent value of the city’s existing building stock.”
