In what has been described by the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) as the largest hospital move ever made in Canada, 154 inpatients, including 139 adults and 15 babies, were recently moved from the Royal Victoria Hospital to the university’s new Glen site. The five-and-a-half hour move was a key redeployment operation of MUHC 2015.

The new site includes 500 individual rooms, two emergency departments and over 50 specialized services, making it one of the most innovative university health care centres in North America.

“This new chapter for the MUHC is a historic event,” says Dr. Ewa Sidorowicz, Associate Director General, Medical Affairs and Director of Professional Services at the MUHC. “I am convinced that the MUHC’s future is in good hands, and that our investment in innovation with this new cutting-edge institution will pay off with great discoveries.”

Preparations are also being made for the move of the Montreal Children’s Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute, scheduled to take place on May 24 and June 14, respectively. Some services from the Montreal General Hospital will also be transferred to the new Glen site.

Contributors to the success of the Royal Victoria Hospital move included MUHC employees and doctors, Health Care Relocations (HCR) staff, Urgences-santé technicians, hospital command centre coordinators and several volunteers.
