The University of Toronto has released the design for the St.George campus’ new Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CEIE). The Centre is the work of Toronto’s Montgomery Sisam Architects and U.K.-based Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

The building will incorporate collaborative learning and hands-on design spaces rather than traditional lecture halls and classrooms. Included in the schematic design is the Lee & Margaret Lau Auditorium, a 500-seat interactive space. There will also be areas for alumni and industry partners to meet with students and collaborate with faculty.

“The CEIE brings together the talents of the entire faculty and the broader university to create the next solutions in Engineering,” says Cristina Amon, dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “It provides the space, facilities and collaborative environment to encourage students, researchers, alumni and industry partners to work together to get great ideas off the ground.”

Smart building concepts will be incorporated into the design, including the integration of heating, cooling, electrical and communication systems into a single network.

The CEIE is expected to open in late 2016.
