Preparations for Toronto Stadium’s turn on the international soccer stage are progressing with the first phase of $146 million worth of planned upgrades ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament now complete. Enhancements to broadcast facilities, Wi-Fi capability, in-stadium videoboards, food concessions and concourse and lounge areas are meant to accommodate an influx of fans and media, beginning with the Canadian national team’s first game of the tournament on June 12, 2026.
Further work on the field and stadium is scheduled to begin in December. That will include installation of 17,000 additional temporary seats, new LED stadium lighting to meet FIFA broadcast specifications, new dugouts for the athletes and creation of temporary hospitality spaces.
The City of Toronto is footing nearly 85 per cent of the cost of the improvements, while Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) covers the remainder. Deloitte Canada has estimated World Cup events and associated spinoffs will generate up to $940 million of economic output in the Greater Toronto Area.
