Resiliency, sustainability and technology are among the global building design trends forecasted for 2014 by architecture and design firm Perkins and Will. The Design and Insights Report, which uses feedback from a sampling of 1,500 professionals, identifies five trending areas of improvement for workplaces.

The survey found that designers would pay greater attention to building resiliency in 2014, given the growing prevalence of natural disasters like floods, tornados and earthquakes. An increased focus on building sustainability was the second trend identified.

“Our view of the future is that the separation between humans and nature will disappear,” says Peter Busby, founder of the Canada Green Building Council and managing director at Perkins and Will San Francisco. “As architects, we endeavor to create buildings in harmony with nature.”

Since the modern office or corporate employee spends the majority of their workday in front of a computer screen, Perkins and Will predicts a trend towards more health and wellness-focused workplace designs.

“There are alarming statistics that indicate movement throughout the day — or lack of it — is part of a new frontier in predicting health outcomes,” says Joan Blumenfeld, interior design director at Perkins and Will New York. “We now have the ability to track metabolic pathways and see the relationship between movement and weight gain.”

The fourth and fifth trends, multi-generational workplaces and collaborative and mobile-focused technologies, rounded out the 2014 forecast.
