Smoking and vaping will be banned on all provincial government property in Newfoundland and Labrador as of September 27. The announcement comes as the province marks its first Well-being Week, devoted to promoting physical, mental and financial health and the goal of becoming one of Canada’s healthiest provinces by 2031.
“We are focusing on creating a shift in how we can collectively make life better in our province,” Premier Andrew Furey advised earlier this month as he announced plans for the inaugural week focused on social determinants of health. “As a government, it means prioritizing spending and policy decisions that support the well-being of everyone in this province, while also empowering you to continue taking meaningful steps to better your well-being.”
The smoking and vaping prohibition will apply in provincial buildings and associated outdoor public spaces, including parking lots and the government’s fleet of vehicles. Smokers and vapers are also encouraged to take advantage of free online counselling that will connect them with support to cease the habit.
