A new $22.8 million film studio and permanent sound stage is coming to southern Alberta.

The project, which has a projected opening date in summer 2015, will be developed by Calgary Economic Development (CED). The agency beat out several other contenders for $5 million in one-time funding to be put towards the studio from the Government of Alberta.

“We’re delivering on our promise to see a film studio built for southern Alberta here in Calgary,” says Heather Klimchuk, Alberta’s Minister of Culture. “This move forward is good for the industry and good for Alberta — Alberta’s film, television and digital media industry was responsible for over $400 million in economic activity over the last five years.”

Although an exact location for the studio has not been finalized, several building specifications and features have been settled. Two sound stages, coming in at 20,000 and 30,000 square feet, will be built, in addition to 18,000 square feet of warehouse space and 10,000–15,000 square feet of production and storage space.

CED will work with ComWeb Group/William F. White International, Lawson Projects and Pacifica Ventures to complete the project.
