Glenlawn Collegiate, a grade 10 to 12 English high school in Winnipeg, M.B., is undergoing renovations to create an approximately $300,000 state-of-the-art science lab. The modern laboratory, which will replace a geography classroom, is the result of Manitoba’s $25-million science lab renewal program, known as the Action Plan for Science Education in Manitoba. Funds were provided to the Louis Riel School Division, of which Glenlawn Collegiate is a part.

Renovations, which have already commenced, include the addition of new equipment and classroom space to support the updated high school science curriculum.

“We know that when it comes to science, classroom instruction combined with laboratory experience gives us the best results,” says Duane Brothers, superintendent of the Louis Riel School Division.  “Once complete, this new, modern lab will help to engage our students in science so they will be well-prepared for further education or careers in the field.”

Manitoba’s science lab renewal program includes investments in science classroom renewal, teacher training and new strategic partnerships.

“Technology is a fundamental aspect of our lives today and students need more opportunities in school to experience and understand it,” says Peter Bjornson, Manitoba’s Minister of Education and Advanced Learning. “These quality investments in science education help our students create a solid foundation for future success.”
