Construction of a new $30 million trades training centre is underway at Camosun College in Victoria, B.C.

The 80,000-square-foot development will be known as the Centre for Trades Education and Innovation. It will house a marine and metal trades training program, as well as a mechanical trades program.

The facility will also feature a study space in the atrium, classrooms and lab space, and an outdoor trades work yard.

“Throughout British Columbia, we are building skills and trades training through targeted investments in infrastructure, equipment and programs,” said Amrik Virk, Advanced Education Minister. “The new trades training centre at Camosun College will assist students in their transition from learning to earning.”

The B.C. government has contributed $29.2 million to the project, with Camosun College providing the remainder. Work will also include renovations for two other buildings on the college’s campus, the Jack White and John Drysdale buildings.

Kinetic Construction Ltd. will lead construction of the project, which is aiming for LEED Gold certification.

The facility is slated for completion in summer 2015.
