Northern Alberta’s Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum made Canadian architecture and design magazine Azure’s list of top 10 architectural projects to follow in 2014.

“We looked at projects from around the world, and one of the most important criteria was a certain adventurousness when it came to form,” says editor David Dick-Agnew. “We wanted projects that aren’t afraid to explore new ways of relating to their surroundings, and to the different ways people will ultimately use them. Often this means developing new construction methods in order to realize something that nobody has done before.”

The three-level development, designed by Toronto-based firm Teeple Architects, will feature gallery spaces, classrooms, a 64-seat theatre, research areas, a restaurant, gift shop and tourist services. A 9-acre outdoor area will feature of sculpted gardens, picnic spaces and walking trails. The museum is scheduled to open in December.

Once complete, the 41,000-square-foot building will be comprised of a world-class museum, research facility and community space. The $35-million project is receiving funding from several sources, with the largest contributions supplied by the County of Grand Prairie No. 1, the Province of Alberta and the City of Grand Prairie.

The museum was one of five Canadian projects that made the top 10 list. Other up-and-coming Canadian developments included the Beach and Towe residential tower in Vancouver, the Mirvish + Gehry condo development in Toronto, Ryerson University’s new Student Learning Centre in Toronto, and the Halifax Central Library.
