Thursday, November 27, 2014

A new 48-unit accessible seniors’ housing complex has entered construction in Whitehorse. The four-storey, state-of-the-art facility, located near the intersection of Front St. and Ogilvie St., will be built to support the needs of seniors with mobility issues. The project is scheduled for occupancy in fall 2015.

“Yukon Housing Corporation envisions a healthy and attainable housing environment for all Yukoners,” says Brad Cathers, Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation. “This government remains committed to ensuring our seniors have access to quality, safe, comfortable and affordable housing.”

Whitehorse firm, NGC Builders, will be responsible for constructing the $11.5-million development, which focuses on energy efficiency and accessibility features designed to give tenants as much independence as possible. Accessible features will include accessibility standard entranceways and doors, mobility washrooms and plumbing fixtures, and accessible lighting controls and window operators.

“This new seniors’ residence will be another state-of-the-art facility added to Yukon Housing Corporation’s senior housing properties,” says Janet Moodie, Yukon Housing Board chair. “This building follows the approach taken by the corporation to design appropriate housing facilities that are reflective of the changing needs of seniors. The board is proud to help more seniors into new safe, comfortable and accessible housing.”

The building will be constructed with input from the Accessibility Advisory Committee, formed to provide direction on proper building accommodations for tenants with mobility challenges.
