A ground-breaking ceremony was recently held in Welland, Ontario for GE’s first “Brilliant Factory” in Canada. PCL Constructors Canada (Toronto) is the company’s construction management partner.

“PCL is honoured to celebrate construction starting and we congratulate GE and partners on their inspiring vision which is bringing investment to the Niagara Region,” said Mike Wieninger, PCL Toronto senior vice president and district manager, in a press release. “In collaboration with our valued partners, we look forward to delivering this first-of-its-kind facility in Canada that will couple the company’s long history and industrial innovation with cutting-edge data science and analytics expertise.”

GE’s Brilliant Factory is expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2017, with production beginning in early 2018. The plant will be one of the most advanced in GE’s global operations and is the first of its kind in Canada.

The multi-modal factory will produce energy-efficient engines and other components that are used all over the world, including manufacturing GE Power’s reciprocating gas engines, components for compression, mechanical drive and power generation.

The consultants on the construction team include CSO Architects in joint venture with B+H Architects, structural consultant Thornton Tomasetti, mechanical/electrical consultant H.H. Angus & Associates Ltd. and Lea Consulting Ltd. on site services.
