Friday, February 20, 2015

According to a recent infographic from Rentseeker, the cheapest major city in Canada in which to rent a bachelor apartment is Windsor, Ont. ($518). The infographic, which is based on data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), illustrates the average pricing and vacancy rates of rental apartments in cities across Canada.

Not surprisingly, Canada’s highest rents were found in places like Toronto, Ont. and Vancouver, B.C. For a one-bedroom apartment in the two major cities, the average rents were listed at $1,201 and $1,123, respectively. Conversely, the cheapest cities included Gatineau, Que. ($630), Montreal, Que. ($661) and Windsor, Ont. ($664).

Rentseeker also provided apartment vacancy rates for bachelor, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments throughout Canada. The highest vacancy rate for a one-bedroom apartment was found in Gatineau (6.4 per cent) and the lowest was seen in Vancouver (0.5 per cent).

According to Rentseeker, it is 61 per cent more expensive, on average, to rent a condo versus a purpose-built apartment unit.
