T.O. upgrades transportation operations centre

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

The newly renovated Toronto Transportation Operations Centre is designed to improve safety and traffic on the city’s streets. Technological upgrades to the centre will allow the city to provide faster updates on traffic conditions and improve traffic efficiency along major routes.

“This state-of-the-art facility is the next step in our plan to get Toronto moving,” says Rob Ford, Toronto mayor. “Fighting gridlock is a top priority for the City of Toronto. These vital investments will help us manage traffic flows more effectively and get Toronto residents where they need to go, both quicker and safer.”

Upgrades to the facility include an updated video wall, capable of monitoring more than 200 cameras at one time. This change adds more than 140 cameras to the facility’s video wall, allowing operators to identify problems along transportation routes and offer appropriate recommendations for the city’s congestion management plan.

Other elements of the city’s plan include a re-evaluation of approximately 1,000 existing traffic signals and the installation of 100 traffic cameras on arterial roads.
