Ontario not sticking with plate renewal fees

Tuesday, February 22, 2022

Ontario-based companies will be absolved from license plate renewal fees for their light-duty fleet vehicles beginning March 13. The provincial government will eliminate its sticker system for passenger and light-duty vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds and forego the associated revenue. It also plans to reimburse passenger vehicle owners for plate renewal fees paid between March 2020 and March 2022.

Currently, the annual fees for passenger and light commercial vehicles are $120 in southern Ontario or $60 in northern Ontario. In future, vehicle owners will still be required to update their license plate registration on an annual or biennial basis, but at no cost. A similar policy is already in place in Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

“Eliminating licence plate renewal fees and stickers is part of our government’s commitment to support drivers as we continue to build Ontario’s transportation network, including by building the Bradford Bypass and Highway 413,” says Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney.

Holders of Ontario driver’s licenses will continue to pay a fee, currently set at $90, to renew them at five-year intervals.
