Nunavut’s Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) will be extended until 2019, to ensure access to affordable and adequate housing options for all Nunavummiuts. The extension is made possible through equal investments from the Governments of Canada and Nunavut. This investment is in addition to $100 million from the Economic Action Plan 2013 (EAP), provided by the federal government as a result of Nunavut’s distinctive need for new affordable housing.

With the investment extension, Nunavut has the freedom to design and deliver a range of affordable housing programs and has decided to invest in purpose-built rental apartments to address the territory’s issue of overcrowding.

“The $100 million in supplementary funding is a welcome sign that our persistent efforts to demonstrate Nunavut’s unique needs to the federal government are being recognized,” says Honourable George Kuksuk, Minister responsible for Nunavut Housing Corporation. “We see the extension of the IAH agreement, which represents $1.45 million per year for five years from both parties, as an opportunity to continue working with our federal partners towards a long-term housing solution for Nunavut.”

The IAH has helped approximately 94 Nunavummiut households since its inception in 2011.
