A new state-of-the-art correctional facility, known as the South West Detention Centre (SWDC), is slated to open Windsor, Ont. The maximum security facility will accommodate 315 beds and will support more than 260 direct and indirect jobs.

The facility will house both male and female inmates and is built to meet LEED Silver certification.

“The opening of the South West Detention Centre is an important milestone in the modernization of the correctional system in Ontario,” says Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Yasir Naqvi. “By increasing programming and mental health supports for inmates, and introducing a direct supervision model, we are making the system safer for correctional officers and inmates.”

The facility’s design will allow for a new mental health unit, more efficient health care and other services for ensuring public, corrections staff and inmate safety. The SWDC will include eight direct supervision living units.

An investment in the modernization of correctional facilities such as the SWDC is part of the government’s economic action plan.
