BC short-term rental rules now in effect

Thursday, May 1, 2025

The Province of B.C. has issued an update on short-term rental registration (STR) numbers and deadlines ahead of the one-year anniversary of new restrictions aimed at reducing illegal listings and increasing the availability of long-term homes.

Effective May 1, 2025, all short-term rental listings must be registered with a provincial registration number. To date, more than 20,000 listings have been registered. When the STR legislation was introduced in 2023, there were an estimated 28,000 individual STR listings in B.C., indicating that more units are being converted to long-term homes.

The minister of housing and municipal affairs is extending the deadlines for STR platforms to validate registration numbers and remove illegal listings, as follows:

  • By June 2, 2025, platforms must stop advertising listings without valid registration numbers and prevent new bookings from those hosts. Previously, this deadline was May 1.
  • By June 23, 2025, platforms must cancel future bookings from hosts without valid registration numbers. Previously, this deadline was June 1.

During this period, the Province will continue working with STR platforms to ensure any technical challenges or concerns are addressed. Hosts are still expected to register their listings by May 1.
