NLC’s Energy House achieves LEED platinum

The Centre of Excellence for Clean Energy Technology at Northern Lights College’s Dawson Creek campus in B.C. has achieved LEED platinum status.

Referred to as the Energy House, the centre was awarded 56 points in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for New Construction and Major Renovations category. A building needs to receive at least 52 points to achieve a platinum rating.

Some of the notable features of the Energy House and its construction process include:

  • Automatic controls for non-emergency interior lighting;
  • A 92 per cent reduction in the waste water generated by the building;
  • Restoration of half the site area with native or adaptive vegetation, which does not require irrigation,
  • Diversion of 91 per cent of construction waste from landfills; and
  • All regularly occupied areas are day-lit.
