On July 25, the redevelopment of a new affordable housing complex known as Qualicum Park Village broke ground. Originally called Kiwanis Village, the new development will replace the existing 20-unit building with 24 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom apartments.

The Qualicum-Parksville Kiwanis Housing Society will be responsible for building management and operations.

“For 40 years our society has managed and operated Kiwanis Village, providing our seniors with safe, affordable housing,” says Pat Weber, president of the Qualicum-Parksville Kiwanis Housing Society. “As Kiwanis Village approached the end of its building life cycle, our society’s vision to continue to serve this community meant expanding the amount of affordable housing options for not just seniors but families in need. I’d like to thank all our community and government partners for bringing this much-needed redevelopment project to fruition.”

Funding for the $3.6 million project was provided by the Government of British Columbia, the Town of Qualicum Beach, the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Qualicum-Parksville Kiwanis Housing Society.

The building, which is geared towards seniors and families, is expected to be ready for tenancy in spring 2015.
