Canada is reinforcing resources to stickhandle construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge with the appointment of Tim Smith to the board of directors of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA). He brings 35 years of construction experience and a background in large infrastructure projects to the role.

The WDBA is mandated through Infrastructure Canada to oversee the construction consortium delivering the new 2.5-kilometre, six-lane bridge between Canada and the United States, which is slated to open by the end of 2024. The bridge is being built through a public-private partnership (P3) with the private sector design-build-finance team, Bridging North America (BNA) Constructors Canada GP, also holding a 30-year operations and maintenance contract for most components of the project once it is completed.

Smith is the founder and president of the construction advisory firm, MPa Consulting Services, and previously held senior executive positions over 30 years with EllisDon, where he led construction of some of Canada’s major infrastructure projects. He has also served on the boards of the Canadian Construction Association and the Ontario General Contractors Association.

“As the Gordie Howe International Bridge project enters the next key phase of construction, Mr. Smith’s extensive experience in delivering major infrastructure projects will be a major asset to the board,” says Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.
