Grand opening for Oshawa Centre redevelopment

The $230-million expansion and redevelopment of Ivanhoé Cambridge’s Oshawa Centre, an enclosed shopping centre in the Durham Region of Ontario, is now complete.

Acrobats and live entertainment added a touch of flare to the grand opening of the 260,000 square foot expansion, added to 375,000 square feet of redeveloped space. The renovation welcomes 60 brands from Lindt and Laura Secord to Forever 21 and Northern Reflections.

Oshawa Centre has come a long way since 1956, when it was built as an open-air shopping centre. Now, this latest addition to the mall-renovation boom includes a 1,000-seat foot court with two full-service restaurants: Kelsey’s and Baxter’s Landing, and 250 underground parking spots.

Sustainable additions include a living wall, which now acts as a landscaping screen to the parking lot, and two electric vehicle charging stations. A 260,000-square-foot white roof painted with solar-reflective white coating was also installed to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are proud of our team, which has worked very hard to make the new Oshawa Centre a destination that delivers everything you want at your doorstep,” said David Baffa, senior vice-president of retail development at Ivanhoé Cambridge. “The expansion impacts the community by providing more great stores to choose from, an environmentally responsible design and brings approximately 1,000 new full-time and part-time jobs to the region.”
