Ontario proposes ban on uniform charges

Thursday, April 16, 2026

Ontario’s newly proposed changes to the Employment Standards Act would prohibit companies from charging employees for required uniforms.

If the legislation passes, Ontario would follow several other provinces that already limit or ban employers from this practice, including British Columbia, Quebec and Manitoba. The ministry would also consult on certain exemptions, such as small businesses.

While the cost range can differ, some workers currently pay more than $50 for a uniform. Last year, there were 383,900 people employed in the restaurant and bar sector in Ontario, where uniforms are often required. This cost barrier is also prevalent in the retail and hospitality sectors.

“Ontario workers are the backbone of our province and they deserve to keep more of what they earn,” said David Piccini, minister of labour, immigration, training and skills development. “Whether you work in a restaurant or hotel, no one should have to pay out of pocket for a uniform just to earn a paycheque.”
