Shades of grey hot in the heart of the home

Every year comes with new trends and 2013 is no exception. This year promises clean lines with minimum fuss, shades of grey and touches of vibrant colour.

Wood veneer cabinet colours have moved to grey and charcoal, with an emphasis on a cool colour palette.

Kitchen backsplash options are trending more toward the use of sanded glass, metallics, mosaics and whites – highlighting circular and square forms, while providing accents of colour to veneer cabinetry.

Alternatives to veneer cabinets are polyester paints for reflective surfaces, and metal accents on cabinet doors and spacers.

Appliances are generally snug-fitting and integrated into the kitchen design. While stainless steel remains the number one choice, there is more movement to mirrored and glass surfaces.

Focal points are still islands and cooking centres, with an emphasis on steam cooking in addition to traditional ovens.

Sinks continue to be predominantly stainless steel undermounts, paired with pullout stainless steel faucets with manual handling. The use of touch technology is gradually entering the marketplace but, for the most part, remains a niche option for most homeowners.

Quartz countertops will be the predominant choice in 2013; however, for those seeking warmer surfaces, there is the option to include wood surfaces on islands to compliment a comprehensive design.

Moving from the countertop to the ground, kitchen flooring is trending to large porcelain tile, also in soft grey.

This year’s overarching theme will, as in recent years, continue to focus on clean vertical and horizontal lines, using shades of grey and touches of vibrant colour. There should be no major rupture from existing design trends.
