Winners of B.C.’s top safety award announced

Six recipients have been selected to receive British Columbia’s highest safety honours at the BC Safety Authority’s annual Lieutenant Governor Safety Awards.

Brian Cook of PowerCheck Electrical Safety Services has been chosen for the Excellence in Electrical Safety category. Cook has published numerous papers on electrical safety, and has authored and delivered curriculum on electrical systems at the University of British Columbia.

Vanderhoof-based Nechako Green Energy, the first biomass heat recovery plant in the Canadian forest industry, will receive the Excellence in Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety award.

In addition, Barry Cavens of Cavens and Associates has won the Excellence in Gas Safety award. Cavens was lauded for contributing his expertise to the development of improved codes and standards in the gas industry across Canada and the United States. He has also contributed to the development of emergency response plans for utilities and other organizations.

The awards, which will be presented by the BC Safety Authority on Dec. 2, 2013, recognize individuals and organizations that demonstrate exceptional leadership, achievement or innovation in the promotion of technical systems safety in the province.
