Studio Daniel Libeskind has released designs for a new apartment building in Berlin’s Chausseestrasse neighbourhood.
The design for the 107,000-square-foot building includes canted walls, a metallic-coated ceramic façade, and large angular windows that are designed to catch light.
The building, named Chausseestrasse 43, will occupy the corner of a block in the centrally-located neighbourhood, across from the headquarters of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service.
“Even as my studio is often called upon to design skyscrapers these days, I continue to love to build homes, the basic unit of human life,” Libeskind says.
Libeskind created 73 one- to four-bedroom apartments on a rectangular plot that has an area that is less than half an acre. The building will have retail on the ground floor, as well as underground parking and a common outdoor area.
The building’s façade cladding is a three-dimensional stoneware tile designed with Casalgrande Padana. The tiles possess sustainable properties such as air purification and are self cleaning.
Berlin-based real estate developer Minerva will partner with property developer Econcept to handle the technical and economic implementation of the building.
