The Canadian Condominium Institute’s Toronto and Area Chapter (CCI-T) has named Liberty at Discovery Place in Pickering, Ont. as Condo of the Year.
“Liberty @ Discovery Place can be summed up in one word and that word is ‘awareness,’” says Brian Horlick, president of CCI-T. “They’re aware of the needs of their residents, the environment, and the larger community. And they turn awareness into action.”
Since it was built in 2005, Liberty has taken action for their residents in the following ways:
- Establishment of the Durham Condo Presidents’ Alliance, which represents the needs and concerns of condo residents to all levels of government.
- Development of the Liberty Emergency BUDDY system in order to help older building residents in the event of medical or other emergencies.
- Renovations to existing laundry rooms, elevators, exercise rooms and garbage rooms to accommodate wheelchairs and differently-abled residents.
- Development and implementation of a comprehensive budget system to help control expenses.
“Many have overcome challenges or have initiated unique programs that make them special,” says Lynn Morrovat, CCI-T operations manager. “Liberty is a great example of a condo that has succeeded through good governance and an emphasis on community spirit.”
Liberty is also the only condominium in the Durham region that has installed solar panels to reduce its carbon footprint and minimize overall building maintenance costs.
CCI-T created the Condo of the Year award in 2009 to recognize the successes of well-governed condominiums.
