Frank Gehry’s first building in London will be part of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment. His firm, Gehry Partners, will be partnering with Foster + Partners to design phase three of the Battersea Power Station.
The third phase of the development is known as the High Street, a retail pedestrian street that acts as a gateway to the entire development and the new Northern Line extension of the London Underground.
There will be two residential zones that make up phase three, located on both sides of High Street. Gehry Parters will design the residential buildings on the east side of the High Street, while Foster + Partners designs the buildings on the west side. Phase three will be comprised of 1,200 residential units, a 200-room hotel, 350,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and a 15,000 square foot library.
“Our goal is to help create a neighborhood and a place for people to live that respects the iconic Battersea Power Station while connecting it into the broader fabric of the city,” says Frank Gehry. “We hope to create a design that is uniquely London that respects and celebrates the historical vernacular of the city.”
Phase three is part of the Rafael Viñoly-designed, mixed-use master plan for Battersea Power Station. The full development includes a blend of residential, offices, shops, leisure and hospitality. The site is being designated as a new town centre for the area, with the master plan revolving around the iconic Battersea Power Station. A town square and a tube station — part of the Northern Line Extension of the London Underground — are also included in the development.
Specialist restoration architects Wilkinson Eyre have been appointed to the Power Station building, while Ian Simpson Architects and dRMM have designed Circus West, phase one of the development.
