Canadian designs win best of kitchen and bath

Tuesday, February 7, 2023

Three Canadian interior firms have won National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) Design + Industry Awards 2023.

The annual awards recognize the design professionals and projects that are setting the bar for the way we live, work and entertain in our homes.  Each reflects the purpose of the association – envisioning a world where everyone enjoys safe, beautiful, and functional kitchen and bath spaces.

The three Canadian winners were:

First Place, Specialty Kitchen (photo above): Rebecca Foster, Director of Design at Welton Design Group, Surrey, B.C. for “North Vancouver Laneway”. Read about the project here.

Second Place, Small Kitchen (under 300 sq.ft): Svetlana Tryaskina, founder of Estee Design, Toronto, ON for “Contemporary and Chic Kitchen”.

The project transformed a dark and dated kitchen in a midtown Toronto condo into a comfortable, well-lit space with plentiful storage and prep areas. The design plan required rearranging the layout to create an open-concept living/kitchen space.

Second Place, Primary Bath: Kendall Ansell, principal of Kendall Ansell Interiors, Coquitlam, B.C. for “Treetop Oasis”.

For a primary bath remodel in a residence in North Vancouver, the goal was an “everlasting oasis” and the space was designed around an existing skylight, which Kendall accentuated with floor-to-ceiling wall tile and a large matte black soaker tub by Victoria + Albert. According to the designer, the challenge with “Treetop Oasis” was configuring the layout to fit the tub, along with a vanity, shower area, and water closet — and allow two people to use the space at the same time.

More than 30 awards were handed out at the ceremony, including the NKBA Student Design Competition winners as well as the NKBA Innovative Showroom Awards Competition winners.

Best Overall Kitchen went to Sarah Robertson, founder and principal, Studio Dearborn. Best Overall Bath went to Mary Maney, Crystal Kitchen + Bath.
