Today Green Seal introduced a revised version of its standard for commercial and institutional cleaning services. The independent nonprofit certifier of sustainable products and services reorganized GS-42 to clarify requirements and streamline the certification process.

The standard’s general criteria and leadership levels remain the same. Service providers who already possess certification are exempt from additional requirements.

“Since its inception, GS-42 has played a significant role in helping building management take necessary steps to advance protection of the environment and human health and safety,” said Arthur B. Weissman, Ph.D., president and CEO, Green Seal. “This revision of GS-42 will further facilitate that goal.”

Fifty companies in Canada and the U.S. possess GS-42 certification. As a result, thousands of properties, including airports, schools and stadiums, are cleaned according to the standard.

Acting as an impartial third party, Green Seal certifies cleaning services based on a scientific standard. GS-42 sets out health and environmental requirements for purchasing, training, operations and communication.

The certification process involves a thorough review of cleaning processes, procedures and records, as well as an on-site facilities audit and periodic monitoring.
