Forensics and coroners complex nets LEED Gold

Friday, May 15, 2015

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) has certified as LEED Gold Toronto’s Forensics Services and Coroners Complex, Carillion Canada announced May 15. At five storeys and 663,000 square feet, the forensic laboratory, medicolegal autopsy and coroner’s court complex is the largest Canadian facility of its kind.

Carillion, an integrated support services company, led the consortium behind the winning bid to design, build, finance and maintain the public private partnership (P3) project. Under a 30-year contract, Carillion will be responsible for facilities management including hard and soft services as well as lifecycle management.

“The project, originally designed to achieve LEED Silver, exceed that level by achieving Gold certification,” said Edmund Mahabir, executive vice president of public private partnership infrastructure development and construction, Carillion.

“By participating in a collaborative process during the design and build phases, we are able to influence the quality of materials and finishes and offer greater reliability by identifying high quality and maximum life expectancy of fabric and equipment, which in turn offers the best value to all stakeholders.”

Among the project’s sustainable features are the waste management that occurred during construction; the use of low-emitting, locally made and sourced materials containing recycled content; the use of high efficiency glazing and ventilation systems; the promotion of carpooling and alternative fuel vehicles; and the development of a preventative maintenance plan.

The Forensics Services and Coroners Complex opened in September 2013.
