Alberta to invest $6.5 billion in infrastructure

Alberta’s recently released Budget 2015 includes a new five-year Capital Plan that will meet the province’s needs for new infrastructure. This includes roads, schools, hospitals and other public facilities on a priority basis, and will triple the funding for maintenance and renewal by 2019-20. According to the Budget, all the schools that have been promised will be built.

Under the Capital Plan, $6.7 billion will be invested over the next five years in the provincial Highway Network, including:

  • road and bridge construction and rehabilitation
  • Highway 63 Twinning
  • the Edmonton and Calgary Ring Roads

In addition, over the next 5 years:

  • $965 million has been earmarked for GreenTRIP, which provides capital funds for local and regional transit projects
  • $2.1 billion will go towards day-to-day provincial highway maintenance and renewal
