Two architects were among the 95 new appointments to the Order of Canada. Barry V. Downs, C.M. of Vancouver, British Columbia was recognized for his contributions as an architect who creates spaces that meld buildings with their natural surroundings. Robert Mellin, C.M. of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador was honoured for his contributions to preserving and restoring Newfoundland’s built architecture and for his publications that have made modern architecture more accessible to a wider audience.

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, announced the 95 new appointments to the Order of Canada in late December. The new appointees include 3 Companions (C.C.), 13 Officers (O.C.) and 79 Members (C.M.). These appointments were made on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada. Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.

The Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Over the last 45 years, more than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
