Toronto is still the North American city to beat when it comes to high-rise developments.

According to research from global building and construction data provider Emporis, Toronto has 130 developments slated for 2014, well ahead of runner-up New York City’s 91 projects. Montreal comes in third with 25 high-rises on the horizon.

Despite the significant difference in numbers, data analysts and market experts say Toronto’s reign may be coming to an end.

“On the basis of current developments, we assume that New York will catch up with Toronto as early as 2015,” says Matthew Keutenius, senior data analyst at Emporis.

Across all locations, high-rise construction was comprised primarily of residential buildings. In Canada, these residences were almost exclusively condominiums.

When developing the research, Emporis considered both high-rises (multi-story buildings at least 35 metres in height) and skyscrapers (100 metres in height or greater).
