The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C. recently selected three final architect teams for its upcoming renovation. The teams include the Vancouver-based Patkau Architects and Ayers Saint Gross with Krueck and Sexton; Mecanoo/Martinez and Johnson Architecture; and Studios Architecture/The Freelon Group.

The finalists will develop two preliminary design ideas: one of a stand-alone library and one of a mixed-use building with additional floors. Both design ideas are intended to show each team’s vision and approach to renovating the central library.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library is scheduled ot have a major renovation and modernization to meet the current and future needs of D.C. residents. The building was designated an historic landmark in 2007.

No decisions have been made on the type or extent of the renovations or additions to the library.
