USGBC adds Green Sports Alliance to its roster

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Professional sports have joined the green movement. To date, 25 stadiums have received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, including Nationals Park, Target Field and CONSOL Energy Center.

To accelerate the green sports movement, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has joined forces with the Green Sports Alliance (GSA). The two organizations will explore LEED certification of sports stadiums across the U.S. and promote engagement opportunities similar to the USGBC’s Green Apple Day of Service, which sees people around the world participate in green school service projects.

“The Green Sports Alliance consists of over 180 professional and collegiate sports teams and venues, all looking to enhance their operations and environmental performance,” says the non-profit organization’s executive director, Martin Tull. “Partnering with the USGBC will help us provide valuable resources and guidance to our members as they work to employ and promote green building initiatives at their respective venues.”

Earlier this year, the USGBC and the GSA created a toolkit that focuses on advancing green schools through sports, which encourages sports organizations to engage their communities in environmental stewardship through local projects. The GSA highlights USGBC initiatives at professional and collegiate sports venues through member resources, including webinars, toolkits, best practice sharing and social media events.
