AECOM wins World Cup stadium contract

Monday, June 24, 2013

AECOM, in association with Zaha Hadid Architects, has been selected to provide design consultancy and construction supervision services for the 2022 FIFA World Cup stadium and precinct in Al Wakrah, Qatar.

“This is an exciting time for Qatar, and our global team of forward-thinking sports experts is well-equipped to meet the challenges that a project of this caliber demands,” says AECOM’s chairman and CEO, John M. Dionisio.

AECOM is a global provider of professional technical and management support services to a broad range of markets, including transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, water and government.

Located approximately 20 kilometres south of Doha, the capital of Qatar, the stadium will have a capacity of 45,000 spectators during the soccer tournament. Following the games, it can be reduced to a 20,000 spectator facility using modular best practice design.

The stadium’s design will integrate cooling technology systems with climate-control requirements for renewable energy production. It will also establish a link to the cultural heritage of the host city and the adjacent historical Qatari settlement of Al Wukair.

The stadium in Al Wakrah is one of three to be constructed before the World Cup. German architectural firm, Albert Speer & Partner, presented designs for the new stadiums, as well as designs for the expansion of two existing stadiums, with Qatar’s bid to FIFA.

Work on the project is set to begin immediately.
