Twelve shipping containers are being converted into social and affordable housing for women in the Vancouver’s downtown eastside.
Construction of the housing project – the first of its kind in Canada – began in late November.
The containers are being stacked three high and two across. Each 320-square-foot apartment will have a private bathroom, kitchen and in-suite laundry. Floor to ceiling windows are at each end and each floor will be linked by an external staircase.
Developed by Atira Women’s Resource Society, the project is slated to be completed by April 2013.
