Remodeled bathrooms, respect for heritage and retrofits for energy efficiency were some of the highlights from this year’s Renovation and Custom Home Awards, presented by the Building Industry and Land Development (BILD) Association on the opening day of the National Home Show in Toronto.
“Of the 27 finalists for the Renovation and Custom Home Awards this year, it was tough to pick the winners, especially in our newest category for Best Green Renovation,” says BILD vice-president of membership and RenoMark program manager, Helen Batista.
“All of the projects, from the stunning bathroom remodels to the magnificent custom home, are design-magazine quality.”
In the newly added category this year, Best Green Renovation, SevernWoods Construction Inc. was presented with the inaugural award for rebuilding a 1950s North York home using sustainable features and finishes.
In the Best Renovation Under $75,000 category, Golden Bee Homes Inc. was given the award for a project that involved remodelling a master bathroom, updating the finishes and creating a relaxing atmosphere.
Carick Home Improvements is the winner of the Best Renovation $75,000 – $150,000 category for a complete main floor remodel of a late 1980s suburban home that opened up the space and added more natural light.
Attard Construction Corp. was the winner in the Best Renovation $150,000 – $300,000 for adding prominence and curb appeal to a modest 1960s suburban ranch-style bungalow by creating a new front facade.
In the Best Renovation $300,000-$500,000 category, Decksterity Carpentry Contracting Ltd. took the trophy for transforming the inside and outside of a home from the foundation to the roof.
There were two winners in the Best Renovation More than $500,000 category. Lewitt Construction Inc. brought a heritage home in Scarborough, Ont., back to life and SevernWoods Construction Inc. worked with new homeowners in Toronto’s ‘Little Italy’ neighbourhood to turn a tired 1880s Victorian triplex into a modern single-family home.
Eurodale Developments was awarded Best Condominium Renovation for adding function and beauty to a 3,000-square-foot highrise home where “not a single surface went untouched.”
In the very competitive category of Best Custom Home, a home in harmony with its environment that blends a mature landscape and traditional-style with its neighbourhood was crowned the best of the best. It was built by Tony Ferkul Construction Management Group and designed by David W. Small Designs Inc.
The prestigious Renovator of the Year award was bestowed upon A Lifetime Contractor Ltd.
