Governor General David Johnston recently announced four Canadian architects have been appointed members of the Order of Canada.

Brigitte Shim and A. Howard Sutcliffe of Toronto have both been appointed “for their contributions as architects designing sophisticated structures that represent the best in Canadian design to the world.” Shim-Sutcliffe Architects Inc. has won numerous design awards and medals for architecture.

James K. M. Cheng of Vancouver has been appointed for “helping to develop the Vancouver-style of architecture, influencing the fact of a city and a generation of Canadian architects.” Cheng is best known for his contribution to Vancouver architecture. He helped create the architectural style known as ‘Vancouverism’ through his green glass condominium towers.

Harold Kalman, a heritage professional/planner and architectural historian has been appointed for his contributions to the preservation of Canada’s built heritage.

The Order of Canada recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation.
