The National Music Centre (NMC) will soon be called Studio Bell in its new home currently under construction in Calgary’s East Village.

A twelve-year, $10-million joint venture between Bell Canada and the NMC will see the creation of a 160,000 square foot cultural organization, expected to become an international hub of music and technology.

NMC’s vast collection of instruments and artifacts will be housed in the new space that will also include 22,000 square feet of exhibitions dedicated to telling Canadian music stories. Recording studios and a 300-seat performance space are also in the works.

“Partnering with Bell supports our national vision and ability to connect with music lovers from coast to coast to coast,” said Andrew Mosker, president and chief executive officer of the NMC. “We are confident the Studio Bell partnership positions us to deliver on our mission, vision and commitment to honour Canada’s music story.”

The funds from the partnership bring the total money raised for the project to $125 million.

So far, the Government of Canada has given $25 million to the project through the Building Canada Fund – Major Infrastructure Component. The Province of Alberta and the City of Calgary have each committed an additional $25 million. Coril Holdings Ltd. also gave a $10-million gift to the campaign.

The facility, set to open in spring 2016, will also feature on-site and outreach education programs and performances, while nurturing the growth of artists.
