Nova Scotia sets permit for carbon capture

Fossil fuel companies in Nova Scotia must now request approval from the province’s Environment Department to carry out carbon capture and storage activity.

The change in regulation comes after a non-profit organization—Carbon Capture and Storage Nova Scotia, a partner of the department—announced plans to research the suitability of the technology.

Carbon capture and storage is a process that traps and stores carbon dioxide emissions underground, preventing the release of greenhouse gases into the air.

Regulation will ensure that research, which includes the collection of geographical data, is completed using correct methods to protect the environment.

“Carbon capture and storage is a relatively new technology that is being researched and explored around the world,” said Environment Minister Randy Delorey. “By acting now, we are ensuring this practice is regulated before any activity is undertaken in Nova Scotia.”
