Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) has assumed administration of the Green Garage Certification program for parking structures. The rating system was devised and launched by the Green Parking Council in 2014 to assess and promote sustainable practices in the design and operations of new and existing facilities, including incorporation of green technology and programs to encourage modes of transportation other than owner-occupied vehicles.

“This exciting collaboration with GBCI solidifies the parking industry’s commitment to sustainable urban transportation,” says John Schmid, chair of the Green Parking Council and CEO of Propark America. “GBCI offers the infrastructure necessary to meet the growing demand for Green Garage Certification and the ability to connect the parking industry to efforts advancing sustainable solutions in communities worldwide.”

GBCI endorses the concept of sustainable mobility. “This will enable our parking structures to achieve increased energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, improved parking space management, integrated mobility solutions and technologies, enhanced performance and stronger community relationships,” observes GBCI president, Mahesh Ramanujam, who also serves as chief operating officer of the U.S. Green Building Council. “Sustainability in parking is integral to the greening of the built environment.”
