Ontario Greenbelt land-use plans up for review

Monday, March 2, 2015

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Southern Ontario’s Greenbelt—the largest in the world—and future land-use plans for the area will be up for review.

The government is looking for ideas on how to continue protecting farm land, water and green space, while building transit-friendly communities.

Groups and individuals can raise their voice at local public consultations, town hall meetings or through the online Environmental Registry.

An expert panel will also be contributing to the review, including Chair David Crombie, former federal cabinet minister and former mayor of Toronto, who said such plans are “crucial to building a sustainable future for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.”

The province will focus on four provincial land use plans: The Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe; The Greenbelt Plan; The Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan; and The Niagara Escarpment Plan.

The review is expected to be finished in 2016.
