Three buildings in Toronto were among the world’s tallest new structures of 2014, pushing Canada to the top of a global list recently compiled by The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

The yearly look back at all 200-metre-plus buildings finished during the previous year, highlighted that China completed 58 towers or 60 per cent of tallest new builds—the most out of any country, followed by The Philippines with five completions.

Canada tied fourth with the United States, Japan and Indonesia, each building three tall verticals; however, Manhattan built the tallest with One World Trade Center at 1,776 square feet.

All such constructs in Canada are Toronto-based, concrete residential towers: Aura at College Park, L Tower and ICE Condos at York Centre 1, which reach a total 2,229-square-feet in height, directly trailing the Big Apple’s total of 3,758 square feet.

Overall, the 2014 year skyrocketed with the completion of 97 200-metre-plus buildings and 11 super-tall buildings reaching 300-metres or more—a record high across the globe.

The CTBUH has documented 50 tall buildings currently exist across Canada, the majority in Toronto, followed by Calgary.
