The CIBC Pan Am and Parapan Am Athletes’ Village/Canary District in Toronto has been recognized as the Best Overall Project at the Canadian Urban Institute’s (CUI) Brownie Awards.

Winners from across Canada were recognized in seven categories at the 13th annual awards, which were presented at a gala in conjunction with the CUI’s Canadian Brownfields conference. The awards recognize excellence in brownfield redevelopment by transforming contaminated sites into “great places.”

“Even though the technical aspects of brownfield redevelopment have largely been overcome since the CUI Brownie Awards were launched, successful execution and implementation still requires a high degree of skill,” says Glenn Miller, vice-president of education and research at the CUI. “This year’s finalists and winners come from five different provinces and are a tribute to the high quality of design and technical expertise across the country.”

The Athletes’ Village, a partnership between the Province of Ontario and Dundee Kilmer Developments Ltd., was commended for the lasting positive impacts the project will have on the local economy.

The CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory in Hamilton, Ont. was selected as the Best Large Scale Project, while the Baggage Building Arts Centre at Prince Arthur’s Landing in Thunder Bay, Ont. received the Best Small Scale Project award.

Also handed out at the gala were seven category-specific project awards, and the Brownfielder of the Year Award, which was given to Bonnie Prior, former president of the Canadian Brownfield Network.
