The Ottawa Central Walmart Supercentre, a former Target store, opened its doors today at 8 a.m.
Located in Billings Bridge Plaza at 2277 Riverside Drive, the new store also embraces online grocery pickup. This ‘click and collect’ system was first rolled out at Walmart’s 11 Ottawa stores last summer.
“We want to make it easy for customers to order their groceries at home, work or while waiting at the doctor’s office so they can enjoy our unbeatable prices while saving a ton of time,” Simon Rodrigue, senior vice-president of ecommerce, Walmart Canada, said at the time.
The new store also showcases sustainability with LED exterior signage, sandwich bales to divert waste from landfill sites, and high efficiency coolers and freezers. As of May 16, the company will stop providing free plastic bags to customers in Ontario to promote the use of reusable bags and ultimately eliminate plastic film from landfill.
“Carrying up to 120,000 products, our supercentres offer an impressive selection of merchandise and value for families, who appreciate and rely on Walmart’s low prices every day and the convenience of one-stop shopping,” said store manager Darin Culbertson who has worked in retail for more than two decades and at Walmart since 2013.
The store employs approximately 150 full- and part-time associates and received close to 1,000 job applications for the in-store positions.
