The onshore work on the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project earned H5M (a joint venture by Hatch Mott MacDonald Ltd. and MMM Group) the top award at this year’s annual Awards for Engineering Excellence held by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia.

The project took home the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Engineering Excellence. The Trans-Canada Highway 1 between Vancouver and Langley is Metro Vancouver’s busiest transportation corridor. The team implemented a number of technical “firsts” for the project, such as developing the majority of the highway design using 3D modelling and building information management methodologies.

Awards were given in six categories: buildings, municipal, transportation, natural resource, energy & industry, and soft engineering.

The 2014 prestigious Meritorious Achievement Award was handed out to Brian Johnson, the now retired vice-president, B.C., at Stantec. The Young Professional Award was given to Allison Clavelle of Urban Systems Ltd., whose resume includes significant roles on major transportation projects.
