Ivanhoe Cambridge plans to invest more than $60 million in CrossIron Mills in an attempt to optimize the Alberta mall, located just north of Calgary. The money will be used to add rental space and expand the centre’s food court.

“With Greater Calgary’s tremendous population growth rate and high disposable income, we are capitalizing on the opportunity to expand CrossIron Mills to welcome more world-class premium outlet brands that are seeking a truly successful retail destination with a proven track record,” says John Scott, Ivanhoe’s senior vice president of development.

The 1.2 million-square-foot shopping centre, one of Western Canada’s largest, features approximately 200 stores. The relocation of the food court will create an additional 46,000 square feet of retail space.

“By expanding and relocating CrossIron Mills’ hugely popular food court, we’re increasing retail opportunities for outlet brands in two prime areas within the centre,” adds Scott.

The project, which is scheduled to begin in January 2015, will seek LEED certification. It will be completed in two phases, the first of which is slated to open in the spring of 2016. The second phase will open the following year.
